Wema Bank launches ALAT Xplore, Nigeria’s first teen-focused banking App
Wema Bank, Nigeria’s trailblazer in digital banking, has unveiled the ALAT Xplore App, Nigeria’s first licensed banking app designed specifically for teenagers aged 13 to 17.
The innovative app, launching on October 26, 2024, aims to equip the younger generation with vital money management skills while providing a safe and interactive platform for financial education.
ALAT Xplore is not merely a banking tool but a comprehensive financial education platform. Teenagers can learn about banking, saving, and spending through a user-friendly interface, designed to teach them essential financial concepts while encouraging independence.
Key features include goal-setting, where users can save for personal goals, and the option to request one of three customized debit card designs, issued in their name, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
Financial experts have praised the initiative, with many noting its potential to significantly improve financial literacy among Nigeria’s youth. “The ALAT Xplore App is a game-changer in cultivating early financial discipline,” says Rotimi Oyeleye, a Lagos-based financial analyst.

“By combining real-time banking with educational elements, teenagers are encouraged to not only manage their funds but also understand the importance of saving and goal setting.”
One of the standout features of the app is its integration with the main ALAT App, enabling parents to oversee their children’s financial activities.
Parents can track expenses, approve money requests, and engage in discussions about budgeting and financial goals, ensuring a balance between autonomy and security.
“This level of parental oversight, combined with interactive learning, ensures that teenagers can make informed financial decisions without compromising their security,” commented Patricia Okonkwo, an expert in financial literacy for youth. She believes that the app’s ability to integrate family discussions into financial learning will foster healthier financial habits early in life.
The ALAT Xplore App allows teenagers to explore financial opportunities while reinforcing the importance of financial responsibility, making it a pivotal tool for the next generation of financially savvy adults.
