3 foreign countries where Yoruba language and culture is spoken and practiced
The Yoruba language originates from the Southwestern part of Nigeria. It is spoken in different parts of Africa, South America, Europe, and The United Kingdom.
As a result of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade of the 18th century, Yoruba indigenes are spread all over the world, not only is the language being spoken but the culture is also practiced. Generations have passed it to generations, the culture can never die.
I will highlight 4 countries apart from Nigeria that speaks the Yoruba language and practice the culture to date.
1. Cuba: This country is a secular state though Roman Catholicism is a major religion practiced there. It is the second most populated country in the Caribbean.
Spanish is the official language of the Cubans, so Yoruba is a second language and its culture is practiced by practitioners of Santeria.
It is believed that during the slave trade, Yoruba slaves from west Africa took their beliefs and culture to Cuba, some believe in Ifa, Sango, Obatala.
2. Elsavador: This country is located in North America. A lot of Yoruba culture is practiced here because the slaves from West Africa were concentrated here. They speak Yoruba and worship sango, Iyemoja and other Yoruba gods.View pictures in App save up to 80% data.
3. Brazil: A lot of Yoruba indigenes were deported to the south and north America and have traced their origin back to Nigeria.
If you go to the state of Bahia in Brazil, you will be shocked because Yoruba is one of the major languages in the state and it is widely spoken. The Pelourinho building which housed the enslaved Yoruba from West Africa before they departed to other countries with their merchants is located here.
Through the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Ogunwusi Brazil was able to officially make the Yoruba language an official language of the country in 2018. Brazil has the highest number of people who speak and practice Yoruba culture.
Other foreign countries that speak and practice the Yoruba language and culture are Togo, The Republic of Benin, Sierra Leone, the United Kingdom, and Togo
