NUJ, NSCDC partner to curb quackery, fake news.
In a bid to curb quackery and spreading of fake news, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Ekiti Command and the state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have entered into an agreement to work together.
The state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr John Fayemi, gave the assurance when members of the Ekiti Council Task Force Committee on Quackery and Fake News led by its Chairman, Mr Raphael Ogbonnaiye, visited the agency in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.
Fayemi assured the committee of agency’s readiness to partner with the union to rid the state of quacks and dissemination of fake news to the public.
He said that the corps was ready to join hands with relevant stakeholders in promoting peace and tranquility in the state.
The NSCDC commandant also called on NUJ leadership to ensure proper identification of those individuals involved in the illegal acts.
He said that security agents would join hands and do everything within their powers to ensure that such people face the full wrath of the law, if apprehended.
Ogbonnaiye had earlier said that the visit was to seek collaboration with security personnels in order to help in curbing the spread of fake news and quackery in the profession in the state.
He said that quacks usually found their ways into the state and take over the affairs of journalism, especially during elections without the input of the state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
“We are seeking this collaboration to help checkmate these people and report them to security personnel for possible proper measures to be taken against them,” Ogbonnaiye said.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that Mr Rotimi Ojomoyela, the Chairman, Ekiti NUJ, had earlier inaugurated a five-man task force committee to rid the state of unprofessionalism.
It was sequel to series of development being manifested by some fake journalists in the state, especially as preparation for new political dispensation gathers momentum.
