Centre recovers 3000 guns from Niger Delta
No fewer than 3000 small arms and light weapons were recovered by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) from the Niger Delta region.
The centre’s national coordinator, Abba Dikko, a retired major-general made the announcement in a statement by the Head of Communication, Air Commodore Ewejide Akintunde.
According to him, different categories of weapons were mopped up by Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), a military joint task force.
The weapons include AK-47 rifles, FN rifles, Beretta rifles, G3 rifles, pump action rifles, and several brands of pistols.
Others are Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), locally fabricated rifles, and ammunition of various calibres.
The officials of the Defence Headquarters, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and others witnessed the handover ceremony.
OPDS Commander, Rear Adm. Aminu Hassan, who represented DHQ, made the presentation to the NCCSALW.
Dikko said the centre would aggregate all illegal weapons recovered from the public, and will destroy them in due time.
