1.5m suffer food deprivation in Sri Lanka
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) on Thursday disclosed that 1.5 million people in Sri Lanka suffer food deprivation and are in need of emergency food assistance. following food shortage in the country.
The WFP in a statement indicated that three out of 10 Sri Lankans faced food insecurity, noting that pregnant and lactating women are the worst affected by the economic crisis in the South Asian country.
The WFP stated that nearly 6.3 million people suffer food insecurity and are in need of help.
The WFP, therefore, plans to support existing social safety net programs to reach one million children through the National School Meals Program.
Sri Lanka is presently facing one of its worst economic crises as the country suffers a shortage in foreign currency, which leads to a shortage in essential supplies such as fuel, medicines and even food items.
