Truck driver flees after killing four in traffic infractions

A truck driver has fled after killing four passengers when he drove against traffic along the Lagos-Abeokuta highway.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Obada Oko, involving 14 persons – nine male adults and five female adults.

Both the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, and the state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while confirming the report, said nine people sustained injuries, four male adults and five female adults.

“A total of four persons were recorded dead, all male adults,” the sister agencies noted.

They said the unregistered truck had a collision with a passenger Mazda bus, marked KRD831YD, killing four persons and injuring nine others.

“The suspected cause of the crash was route violation (driving against traffic) on the part of the truck; unfortunately, the driver refused to stop,” she said.

The injured victims, the FRSC said, were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta; the State General Hospital, Ijaye Abeokuta and Aries Medicare Hospital, Obada, for medical attention.

It was gathered that the corpses have been taken by their family members.

Meanwhile, the TRACE Corps Commander/CEO, ‘Seni Ogunyemi, and the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Ahmed Umar, had commiserated with the families of the crash victims, advising motorists to always obey traffic laws by not driving against traffic.

The traffic officers reiterated the role of passengers in cautioning drivers, urging them to use the toll free number, 112 for state and 122 for federal to report any reckless driver.
