10 years after: Rev King to face hangman soon

The Lagos State Government may soon execute the General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, popularly referred to as Rev King.

Other inmates on death roll will also be executed as revealed by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Adeniji Kazeem.

This is coming after 10 years Justice Joseph Oyewole, of the Lagos High Court Ikeja, found him guilty of murdering Ann Uzoh, one of his church members.

Kazeem, who was said to have visited some prisons in the state on the order of the State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, revealed that the state government was reviewing cases of those on death roll and would take a decision on that very soon.

The Commissioner pointed out that the previous administration had not given it a thought to sign necessary documents for the execution of convicts on death row. He added that Gov. Ambode’s administration is doing everything possible to sign the execution document to commit some inmates to death.

Kazeem said, “Very soon, you will see the action of this government on that issues, we are reviewing the case on Rev. King and others on death roll.

“Lots of people are on death row, Rev. King is not the only one on death row, it is on the instruction of Ambode that I visited the prisons recently and I discuss the issue with the prison officials and they expressed concern.

“We are moving in that direction of signing. The prison officials said we need to look at that seriously. Those on death row are beginning to think they have some rights. We are going to move in that direction, you will hear from me, but I will not tell you the exact date.”

National Daily recalls that Rev. King was arraigned on the 26 September 2006, and sentenced to death on the 11 January, 2007.

He was arraigned before the Lagos high court on a 6 count charge of murder and attempted murder.

He was accused of torturing to death one of his members named Ann Uzoh. Even though he pledged ‘not guilty’, he was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.

During the trials, a total of 10 witnesses testified on oath that Reverend King was the perpetrator and that he was guilty.

However, with overwhelming evidence, the Presiding Judge, Justice Joseph Oyewole, of The Lagos High Court Ikeja, on 11 January 2007 found him guilty of the murder of Ann Uzoh and sentenced him to death by Hanging.

He appealed the High Court judgment at the Supreme Court but the judgment was upheld on the 27 February, 2016.

Since then, he has been on death roll and have, in several occasion been transferred from one prison to the other.
