The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that power instability will persist as repairs and maintenance work continue following another collapse of the national grid. This marks the second grid failure within 72 hours, resulting in widespread power outages across the country.

In a statement released on Thursday, Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, detailed the incident, which occurred at 11:29 am when the grid experienced a sudden surge in frequency, rising from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz.

Mbah explained that the surge was linked to complications at one of the substations, which had to be shut down to prevent further issues.

“Recovery efforts were immediate, with the Abuja Axis restored within 28 minutes. Ongoing recovery work continues,” Mbah said.

TCN is currently engaged in major repair and upgrade efforts on several critical transmission lines and substations across the country. These include the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro-Mando axis, significant upgrades at the Jebba transmission substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV transmission line.

Mbah also noted that following the submission of an investigative report into previous grid collapses, TCN has begun addressing the system’s weaknesses. “We are working to address the gaps identified in the report, which will enhance the overall stability and resilience of the grid,” she stated.

Despite these efforts, Mbah warned that some degree of instability may persist in the system until the repairs and upgrades are fully completed.

“We understand the disruptions are challenging for the public, and we ask for their patience as we work to address these issues,” Mbah added. “TCN remains committed to improving the reliability of the electricity supply, recognizing the critical role that stable power plays in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.”

The statement also highlighted that TCN is taking necessary measures to ensure long-term stability in the national grid, including addressing infrastructure issues such as vandalism of transmission lines.

As the repairs continue, TCN assured the public that the company is focused on strengthening the grid and implementing technical upgrades to ensure more reliable and resilient electricity supply for the future.
