President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Jami’u Abiola as his Senior Special Assistant on Linguistics and Foreign Matters, a move seen as leveraging Abiola’s expertise in international relations and cultural diplomacy.
The appointment, effective from November 14, 2024, was confirmed in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the appointment aligns with the provisions of the Certain Political and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act of 2008, as amended.
Until his new appointment, Jami’u Abiola served as the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties in the Office of the Vice President, where he played a significant role in policy coordination and strategic advisory.
Abiola is the son of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the widely celebrated winner of Nigeria’s annulled 1993 presidential election, adding a layer of historical significance to his new position.
In his new role, President Tinubu tasked Abiola with working closely with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to enhance Nigeria’s engagement on linguistic and cultural diplomacy fronts, leveraging his expertise to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign relations.

Abiola’s appointment has sparked discussions among political analysts, particularly regarding its potential impact on Nigeria’s global engagements. Dr. Amina Ogundipe, a professor of International Relations at the University of Ibadan, highlighted the strategic importance of the role:
“Linguistic and cultural diplomacy are crucial tools in modern foreign policy. By appointing Jami’u Abiola, the Tinubu administration signals an intention to strengthen Nigeria’s soft power in international relations.”
Similarly, Adeyemi Balogun, a foreign policy consultant, noted that Abiola’s ability to navigate complex cultural and linguistic landscapes could bolster Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts, especially in multi-lingual international forums.
Abiola’s role is expected to involve addressing language barriers in international negotiations, fostering cultural exchanges, and shaping Nigeria’s narrative on the global stage. This aligns with President Tinubu’s broader agenda to re-establish Nigeria’s leadership within Africa and beyond.
“The appointment of someone with both a strong intellectual background and a legacy tied to democracy speaks volumes about this administration’s focus on leveraging human capital for foreign policy success,” said Balogun.

As the son of MKO Abiola, Jami’u’s appointment also carries symbolic weight, tying Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts to a legacy of democracy and human rights. Political commentator Ifeanyi Nwoko described it as a “nod to history,” adding:
“By bringing Jami’u Abiola into the fold, the administration is drawing from a legacy of patriotism and resilience that resonates deeply with Nigerians.”
Despite the optimism surrounding his appointment, experts caution that the position will come with significant challenges. From managing Nigeria’s strained international relationships to addressing criticisms over recent foreign policy moves, Abiola will need to navigate a complex and dynamic diplomatic landscape.
As Jami’u Abiola takes on this pivotal role, expectations are high that he will bring a unique blend of expertise and legacy to Nigeria’s foreign policy framework. His success will likely depend on his ability to bridge linguistic divides, foster cultural understanding, and enhance Nigeria’s soft power in the global arena.
