Iheanacho joins Middlesbrough on loan in bid for regular playing time

Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho has secured a loan move to English Championship side Middlesbrough, where he will remain until the end of the season.

The move sees the 28-year-old forward return to English football after an underwhelming spell at LaLiga club Sevilla, which he joined on a free transfer last summer.

Iheanacho is no stranger to the English Championship, having played a crucial role in Leicester City’s successful promotion campaign last season.

His experience at the level is expected to be a major boost for Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough side as they push for a place in the Premier League.

During his brief stint in Spain, the Nigerian striker made 11 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals.

However, he struggled for consistent game time in Sevilla’s system, leading to the decision to seek a move where he can play more regularly.

With over 300 career appearances and 85 goals, Iheanacho arrives with a wealth of experience that could prove vital for Middlesbrough’s attack.

He has also been a reliable performer for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, netting 15 goals in 57 international matches.

His versatility as a center forward and attacking midfielder makes him an exciting addition to Carrick’s squad. Former England international and football pundit Danny Murphy believes the move could be a game-changer for both the player and the club.

“Iheanacho has the technical ability and experience to dominate at Championship level. He was crucial for Leicester in their promotion push, and Middlesbrough will benefit massively from his goal-scoring instincts,” Murphy stated on BBC Sport.

Football analyst Paul Merson also weighed in, saying, “Iheanacho has been unlucky with playing time at Sevilla, but he remains a very intelligent forward. This move gives him the chance to regain his confidence ahead of a potential return to top-flight football.”

Iheanacho began his professional career at Manchester City, where he won the League Cup in 2016 as an 18-year-old before moving to Leicester City in 2017. At Leicester, he played a key role in their FA Cup triumph in 2021, scoring crucial goals along the way.
