Thousands protest in Brussels against planned Government reforms

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of central Brussels on Thursday, protesting proposed government reforms that have sparked widespread opposition across Belgium.

Police estimates placed the number of demonstrators at approximately 60,000, as protestors waved banners and chanted slogans against the newly-formed Arizona federal government agreement.

The proposed reforms, which include changes to pensions, stricter conditions for early retirement, and cuts to public services, have generated significant backlash.

Critics argue that these measures will disproportionately affect lower-income workers and place additional pressure on Belgium’s already overburdened public service infrastructure.

The demonstration brought parts of the Belgian capital to a halt, with major routes blocked and public transportation severely disrupted.

Brussels Airport canceled 430 flights as ground operations were suspended, while metro, bus, and tram services were also heavily impacted.

The protest was organized by Belgium’s largest trade unions, including FGTB, CSC, and CGSLB.

Union leaders argue that the reforms threaten job security and the quality of state services, leaving many workers vulnerable.

Despite the disruption, the protest remained largely peaceful.

However, union leaders have warned that a nationwide general strike will take place on March 31 if the government does not reconsider the proposed reforms.
