Fake gynaecologist exposed in Abia, faces trial for medical impersonation

A shocking case of medical fraud has surfaced in Abia State, where a woman posing as a gynaecologist and Chief Medical Director (CMD) at Echoes of God’s Mercy & Grace Mission Specialist Hospital, Umuahia, has been exposed.

The suspect, Miriam Ugochi Emenike, allegedly used forged credentials to secure employment at the hospital in 2023, despite concerns raised by staff over her qualifications.

Her fraudulent activities were uncovered only after multiple cases of medical malpractice, including a miscarriage and a patient’s death, occurred under her supervision.

Investigations revealed that Emenike presented a fake medical degree from Imo State University (IMSU).

Despite initial doubts from administrative staff about the authenticity of her credentials, the hospital’s CEO insisted on hiring her and later promoted her to CMD, worsening the situation.

In September 2023, she administered incorrect medications that led to a miscarriage in one patient and the death of another.

These incidents raised alarms among medical professionals at the hospital, prompting them to demand verification of her qualifications.

When confronted, Emenike failed to present a valid medical license.

Instead of facing dismissal, she was shockingly promoted to the position of CMD, further raising concerns about the hospital’s management and regulatory oversight.

Appalled by the hospital’s decision to retain an unqualified individual, all doctors at the hospital resigned in protest.

In a formal letter to the CEO, they demanded independent verification of all medical staff credentials.

Warned that allowing an unqualified individual to lead the hospital endangered patients’ lives and put licensed doctors at risk of legal action.

Following a petition from concerned medical professionals, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) launched an investigation, which revealed that:

Emenike’s name was absent from the official registry of licensed medical practitioners.

The folio number she used belonged to another doctor, proving she fraudulently assumed a medical identity.

In response to these findings, Miriam Ugochi Emenike has been charged with forgery, impersonation, and obtaining employment under false pretenses.

Her case is now before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where medical professionals and other witnesses are expected to testify against her.

This disturbing case has sparked outrage within the medical community, highlighting the urgent need for stricter verification processes to prevent unqualified individuals from jeopardizing lives in the healthcare sector
