Armed attack targets general security directorate in Damascus

Unknown armed assailants launched an attack on a General Security Directorate building in the Mazzeh district of Syria’s capital, Damascus, on Monday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The attackers, who arrived in a vehicle, threw grenades and fired automatic weapons at the facility, prompting an immediate response from on-duty security personnel.

A shootout ensued, after which the attackers fled toward the western part of the district.

Security forces have since launched a manhunt in Mazzeh, detaining several individuals believed to be connected to the attack.

Authorities have also heightened security measures in the area, with reports suggesting that an extensive operation is underway to locate the perpetrators.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and there has been no official word on any casualties or damage.

The attack occurs amidst rising tensions in Syria, particularly following recent clashes between security forces and armed personnel loyal to the former regime in the coastal region, which led to over 1,000 deaths, many of them civilians.
