The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the prison break at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State, following the escape of at least 12 inmates.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the prison break at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.
The minister’s directive came following reports of the escape of at least 12 inmates from the facility in the early hours of Monday.
The order was announced in a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, on Monday in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo described the incident as “unfortunate” and expressed his commitment to ensuring that all fleeing inmates are apprehended and brought to justice.
To aid in the investigation and subsequent manhunt, the Minister assured that the ministry would make full use of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s (NCoS) robust biometrics systems and other technological solutions that are already in place.
These tools, Tunji-Ojo emphasized, would be pivotal in tracking down and recapturing the escapees.

Furthermore, the Minister directed the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to immediately visit the Koton Karfe facility.
Tunji-Ojo instructed Ndidi to evaluate the situation on the ground and carry out a thorough audit of the incident to determine the exact causes of the break and prevent future occurrences.
The Minister also reassured the public that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with other security agencies, was fully engaged and taking all necessary steps to restore order and ensure that security is maintained. “We are on top of the situation, and we will not allow this to disrupt the peace and safety of our citizens,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
