David Mark condemns attacks by suspected herdsmen in Benue, urges justice and vigilance

Former President of the Nigerian Senate, David Mark, has strongly condemned the recent attacks on several communities in Benue State by suspected armed herdsmen.

The statement, which was issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Paul Mumeh, on Monday in Kano, highlighted the devastating impact of these attacks on the state’s inhabitants.

Mark stated that the attacks, which have occurred in various communities over the last few weeks, have resulted in the loss of lives and the destruction of property worth billions of naira.

The affected areas include Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Ohimini, Okpokwu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Gwer West, Gwer East, Katsina Ala, Logo, and Ukum Local Government Areas of the state.

He further noted that just a few weeks ago, residents of Gwer-West were killed, sparking protests in the area, and that last week, a similar tragedy unfolded in Otukpo, where numerous individuals were killed, and others were kidnapped.

Mark expressed relief that some of the individuals responsible for these heinous acts have been apprehended by security forces, urging authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to ensure all those involved, whether directly or indirectly, face the full consequences of the law.

He also called for increased vigilance in communities, encouraging local youths to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement agencies in order to prevent further attacks.

Mark emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and warned against stereotyping any ethnic group or retaliating against innocent individuals due to these attacks.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in these brutal incidents, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.

Mark concluded his statement by urging unity and vigilance to prevent the escalation of violence in the affected communities.
