Surety in court for allegedly failing to produce defendants
A 67-year-old man, Mohammed Hassan, has been brought before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly perverting the course of justice by standing surety for defendants who subsequently evaded court proceedings.
Hassan is facing a one-count charge before Magistrate Mrs. Funke Ogun, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Esther Adesulu, informed the court that the alleged offense occurred on May 19, at the Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
“She alleged that the defendant stood as surety for defendants in the cases of COP vs Ismaila Umoru, COP Vs Yusuf Zebo, COP Vs Mohammed Modu, COP Vs Adamu Abubakar, and COP Vs Yahaya John. According to the prosecution, the surety had undertaken to produce the defendants as at when due, but failed to do so till date.”

The prosecution further alleged that Hassan conspired to pervert the course of justice through his actions.
The offense contravenes the provisions of Section 97(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The sitting granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case has been adjourned until July 10 for mention.
