The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has launched an investigation into Nigerian singer Speed Darlington following the circulation of a viral video in which he allegedly claimed to have had a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.

The controversial footage, which appeared on social media earlier this week, sparked widespread outrage, with many viewers condemning the artist for what appeared to be an admission of engaging in unlawful conduct with a minor.

Amid the backlash, Speed Darlington retracted his statement, claiming that the confession was entirely fabricated for publicity purposes. “I was only using the fictitious tale to promote my latest song,” he said, adding, “I need controversy to eat.”

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) was the first to respond to the video. However, the agency noted it could not take further action due to jurisdictional limitations, as the location of the alleged incident remains unspecified.

In a statement, the DSVA said: “While the individual in question did not specify the location of the incident during the Instagram Live session, we must clarify that the DSVA’s jurisdiction is limited to Lagos State. In view of the above, and in line with our commitment to justice, we have escalated the situation to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).”

Following the referral, NAPTIP confirmed on Wednesday via a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that its Cybercrime Response Team had commenced a full investigation.

“The NAPTIP Cybercrime Response Team has commenced investigations into the disturbing Instagram Live video and other related content made by the same individual,” the agency said

. “We at NAPTIP are committed to a world where children are safe and free from all forms of violence.” The agency stated

As of the time of reporting, Speed Darlington has not been officially charged, and investigations are ongoing.
