Trailblazing Leadership: VON’s Jumoke Johnson Elected NAWOJ Lagos Chairperson

In a resounding affirmation of integrity, experience, and vision, veteran broadcaster Jumoke Johnson emerges Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, marking a new dawn for the state’s most influential network of women in media.

Held under tight security and marked by a spirit of democratic unity, the keenly contested NAWOJ Lagos elections on Friday saw Johnson emerge victorious after securing a wide margin over her opponents. With over two decades of exemplary service in broadcast journalism, Johnson’s ascendancy is seen not just as a win for the association, but as a significant moment for female leadership in Nigeria’s media landscape. The election brought together dozens of delegates, media practitioners, and observers. Johnson emerged as the top choice, praised for her leadership, commitment to ethical journalism, and unwavering advocacy for women’s rights.

Jumoke Johnson’s career is a masterclass in perseverance and purpose. From her early days as a junior reporter to her tenure as Chairperson of the NUJ VON Chapel, she has consistently pushed boundaries, advocating for inclusive narratives and equitable media practices. Her election is widely regarded as a nod to her unshakable commitment to mentorship, media ethics, and women’s rights.

“Her leadership will be defined by courage and compassion,” said Anu M. Thomas, newly elected Secretary of NAWOJ Lagos. “We are fortunate to have her at the helm.”

New Executive, Bold Agenda

Joining Johnson in the executive are other formidable media professionals:

• Secretary – Anu M. Thomas, a radio journalist and human rights advocate.

• Treasurer – Omolola Olamijulo, known for her transparency in media finance operations.

• Financial Secretary – Abiola Adaramoye, a respected editorial strategist and long-time NAWOJ member.

Their collective mission is clear: to restore trust, galvanize professional development, and prioritize the safety and welfare of female journalists across Lagos.

As the sun sets on the previous administration, many journalists especially young women see Jumoke Johnson not only as a leader but as a symbol of hope in an often unforgiving media terrain.

“We needed a leader who understands both the newsroom and the boardroom,” said Bolanle Shittu, an investigative journalist and NAWOJ Lagos member. “Jumoke is that leader.”

The road ahead is no doubt challenging, but with the wisdom of experience and the fire of vision, Jumoke Johnson appears ready to lead NAWOJ Lagos into a future where women journalists are not just seen but heard, protected, and empowered.

The election is not just about leadership change it’s a call to action for all media institutions to prioritize gender equity and safety in the workplace.

“Jumoke Johnson represents a generational voice a bridge between legacy journalism and the next generation of women leaders,” said Bolanle Shittu, an investigative journalist and NAWOJ Lagos member.

In a stirring acceptance speech, Johnson thanked her predecessor and laid out her blueprint for progress under the banner of “FAME” – a strategic agenda built on:

• Focus on Advocacy and Advancement

• Access to Mentorship

• Media Innovation

• Empowerment through Welfare

“As our campaign spelled out – FAME – we will focus on advocacy, mentorship, media innovation, and empowerment,” Johnson said. “This manifesto was crafted to ensure no member is left behind. We believe it will bring meaningful progress as we hit the ground running.”

Johnson also extended her gratitude to VON management, past NAWOJ leaders, Lagos NUJ Executives, and her family and colleagues, acknowledging their unwavering support during her campaign.

“We are ready. We are focused. And we are united,” Johnson concluded. “Together, we will build a NAWOJ that works for every woman journalist in Lagos.”

Mrs. Johnson concluded her speech with gratitude for the support from colleagues, friends, family, and NAWOJ members, promising a transparent and effective administration focused on advancing the welfare and professionalism of women journalists across Lagos.

“Today, we begin a new chapter not of titles, but of transformation,” Johnson declared in her acceptance speech. “We will not only amplify women’s voices in the newsroom, but ensure their welfare, safety, and growth are non-negotiable priorities.”

In his remarks, NUJ Chairman, Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, Represented by the Vice Chairman, Mr. Philip Nwosu, congratulated the new leadership and urged them to foster unity and impactful programs. Mr. Kayode Sutton, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Lagos State, commended the outgoing chairperson while extending a warm welcome to the new executive members. He encouraged them to remain committed to their principles and manifesto.

The election was supervised by NAWOJ B-Zone Vice Chairperson Adeola Adekunle, who also administered the oath of office.
