AC Milan open talks with Mauricio Pochettino after Allegri exit
AC Milan have reportedly opened discussions with Mauricio Pochettino over the club’s vacant managerial position following the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri after a disappointing end to the Serie A season.
The move comes amid a major restructuring at the Italian club after Milan’s failure to secure a UEFA Champions League place. Reports indicate that the club’s ownership, RedBird Capital Partners, also oversaw the departures of CEO Giorgio Furlani, Sporting Director Igli Tare, and Technical Director Geoffrey Moncada following the team’s poor finish to the campaign.
Milan’s final-day 2-1 defeat to Cagliari Calcio reportedly confirmed the club’s Europa League qualification and intensified pressure on the management structure.
According to reports, Milan representatives recently met privately with Pochettino in Atlanta ahead of the United States Men’s National Team’s pre-World Cup training camp. The Argentine manager currently leads the United States men’s national soccer team and remains under contract with U.S. Soccer until after the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on speculation surrounding his future, Pochettino insisted he remains focused on his current role with the national team.
“We’ve had so many approaches, and we always say we finish the contract in July after the World Cup,” he reportedly said. “People that question my commitment are people that want to create some problem.”
U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson also acknowledged growing interest in the coach but expressed confidence in his commitment to the American project.
Should Pochettino eventually move to the San Siro, the appointment would reunite him with Christian Pulisic, who has become one of Milan’s standout performers since joining from Chelsea F.C. in 2023.
Reports also suggest that American midfielder Yunus Musah could return to Milan after his loan spell with Atalanta BC.
Pochettino is believed to be one of several candidates under consideration by Milan as the club looks to rebuild ahead of the new Serie A season. Other names reportedly linked with the role include Andoni Iraola and Antonio Conte.
Former Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, who currently serves as a senior adviser to the club’s ownership, is also expected to play a role in the search for a new manager.
The Rossoneri are aiming to return to title contention next season after a campaign that fell short of expectations both domestically and in Europe.
