Fenerbahçe prepare €28m bid for Fulham defender Calvin Bassey amid title push
Turkish giants Fenerbahçe S.K. are reportedly preparing an ambitious move worth over €28 million for Nigerian international defender Calvin Bassey, as the club seeks to strengthen its squad ahead of a renewed push for the Süper Lig title.
The proposed transfer forms part of a broader recruitment plan aimed at ending Fenerbahçe’s long-standing domestic title drought, with rivals Galatasaray S.K. having recently extended their dominance in Turkish football.
According to reports, Fenerbahçe presidential candidate Aziz Yıldırım has taken a leading role in the pursuit, with discussions allegedly initiated during a visit to London involving representatives of Fulham F.C. and the player’s camp.
Bassey, 26, joined Fulham from Dutch club AFC Ajax in 2023 for a reported €22.5 million fee and has since established himself as a regular in the Premier League, reaching over 100 appearances for the club.
Fulham are understood to be in a strong negotiating position, with the defender contracted until 2027 and the club holding an option to extend his deal by a further year. Manager Marco Silva is reportedly unwilling to sanction a departure unless an exceptional offer is made.
Fenerbahçe view Bassey as a key defensive target capable of strengthening their backline as they attempt to close the gap on domestic rivals and compete more effectively in European competition.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Bassey’s career has included spells at Leicester City’s academy, Rangers FC where he won domestic honours and reached a Europa League final—, before a high-profile move to Ajax and later Fulham, where he has continued his development as a versatile defender capable of playing centrally or at left-back.
The proposed deal is part of a wider transfer strategy reportedly being considered within Fenerbahçe’s leadership structure, with additional targets believed to include reinforcements in defence, midfield, and attack as part of a summer rebuild.
Negotiations are expected to develop further in the coming weeks as the club’s internal political and sporting planning continues ahead of the new season.
