The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced its plans to engage a consultant to conduct a comprehensive study on the level of competition in the country’s telecommunications sector.

The move aims to provide an independent, data-driven assessment of competitive conditions and inform regulatory strategies to strengthen the industry.

The announcement was made in a press statement released by Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at the NCC, noting that the initiative is in accordance with Section 92 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) and the Competition Practices Regulation (CPR) 2007.

According to the statement, the study will provide insights into market dynamics, helping the NCC implement proportionate regulatory interventions that enhance competition, protect consumer interests, attract investment, and advance Nigeria’s digital development objectives.

The findings are expected to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the telecommunications sector.

“As part of the study, the consultant will engage with a broad range of critical stakeholders, including licensed operators, industry associations, and consumer groups.

Stakeholders will be invited to provide data, submissions, and perspectives to enrich the analysis,” the NCC noted.

The Commission emphasized that this initiative aligns with its ongoing efforts to foster a competitive, efficient, and consumer-focused telecommunications environment in Nigeria.

Industry experts say such studies are vital for identifying structural gaps, promoting innovation, and ensuring fair market practices that benefit both providers and end-users.

The NCC has encouraged all stakeholders to actively participate in the process to ensure the study accurately reflects the realities of the Nigerian telecom market.
