Havertz, Balogun, Ayari lead early Golden Boot race after explosive World Cup opening week

The opening week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has produced an early surge in goals, with Germany’s Kai Havertz, United States forward Folarin Balogun, and Sweden’s Yasin Ayari emerging as the joint leaders in the race for the adidas Golden Boot.

All three players have scored twice in their opening group-stage matches, setting a fast early tempo in the tournament’s scoring charts as the expanded 48-team competition unfolds across North America.

Folarin Balogun made the strongest early impact for the co-hosts, scoring a first-half brace in the United States’ 4–1 win over Paraguay in Los Angeles. The AS Monaco striker became the first American player since 1930 to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match, and his tally has given him a slight edge in the standings due to having played fewer minutes than his rivals.

Germany’s Kai Havertz also registered a brace in his side’s commanding 7–1 victory over Curaçao in Houston. The Arsenal forward played a key role in Germany’s dominant attacking display, helping them open their Group E campaign in emphatic fashion.

Sweden’s Yasin Ayari joined the early leaders later in the day after scoring twice in Sweden’s 5–1 win over Tunisia, further tightening the early competition at the top of the scoring table.

Behind the leading trio, several players are already on the scoresheet with one goal each, including Giovanni Reyna of the United States, Cyle Larin of Canada, Raúl Jiménez of Mexico, and Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior.

With several tournament favourites yet to fully get underway, including Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Lionel Messi, the Golden Boot race remains wide open. However, the early form of Balogun, Havertz, and Ayari has set an early benchmark in what is expected to be a tightly contested individual award.

FIFA’s tie-breaking rules will come into effect if players finish level on goals, with assists used first as the deciding factor, followed by total minutes played if needed.
