Anambra Police arrest couple after twin infants found dead in Okpoko drainage
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a couple following the discovery of the bodies of twin infants in a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, has sparked widespread concern among residents and prompted a full-scale investigation by law enforcement authorities.
According to police sources, officers attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters responded to a distress call from residents who reported the presence of suspected newborn babies inside a drainage canal along Cooperative Street in the Nwokedi area of Okpoko.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers recovered the lifeless bodies of the twin infants from the drainage.
The bodies were subsequently evacuated and deposited at a mortuary, where autopsies will be conducted to determine the exact cause and circumstances of their deaths.
Following the discovery, police operatives launched an immediate investigation, working alongside local vigilante groups and community leaders to trace those connected to the incident.
The investigation led to the arrest of a man and a woman believed to be the biological parents of the deceased infants.
Police authorities have not released the identities of the suspects, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Sources familiar with the inquiry said detectives are examining several possible circumstances surrounding the deaths, including whether the infants were already deceased before being abandoned or died as a result of neglect and exposure.
Confirming the development, the Anambra State Police Command said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further investigation.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of children and vowed to ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.
Residents of the area expressed shock over the incident, describing it as a disturbing development that has left the community in mourning.
Police have urged members of the public with relevant information that could assist the investigation to come forward as efforts continue to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the deaths of the twins.
