FG revives national digital postcode project, integrates system with NIN
The Federal Government has revived Nigeria’s long-delayed national digital postcode project, integrating it with the National Identification Number (NIN) system in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s digital identity infrastructure and improving public service delivery.
The initiative, first conceived in 2006 but abandoned for years, was officially relaunched following the signing of a strategic partnership between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
The collaboration, backed by the provisions of the NIMC Act 2026, is designed to link every Nigerian’s verified identity with a confirmed physical address, creating a unified digital identity and location database.
Under the new arrangement, citizens will be able to verify their residential or business addresses and retrieve their digital postcodes through the NINAuth platform after technical teams from both agencies completed the integration of the two systems.
Speaking at the launch, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the integration would strengthen Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure by connecting a person’s identity with a verified location.
She noted that while the National Identification Number establishes an individual’s identity, the National Postcode System confirms where that individual can be reached, describing both as essential components of inclusive governance and digital transformation.
According to the government, the project is expected to address long-standing challenges associated with inaccurate and fraudulent addresses by replacing the traditional postcode system with a modern Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled alphanumeric addressing model. The new framework assigns a unique digital address to every building across the country.
Officials said the initiative would improve identity verification for banks and other financial institutions, enhance Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, boost e-commerce and logistics by reducing failed deliveries, strengthen the targeting of government social intervention programmes, and improve emergency response through more accurate location data.
NIPOST Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi, said the project marks a major shift in the agency’s role from traditional mail delivery to becoming a key player in Nigeria’s digital economy.
She added that the digital postcode system has been mapped to align with existing state and local government boundaries to ensure nationwide accuracy and consistency.
The Federal Government said funding for the project has been secured and directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to begin integrating the digital postcode system into their operations as part of the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.
