Messi leads Ballon d’Or race ahead of 2026 World Cup final
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has emerged as the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or following his match-winning performance in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, with the latest projections placing him narrowly ahead of Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal in the race for football’s most prestigious individual award.
The latest Ballon d’Or rankings, based on prediction market estimates, show Messi as the favourite to claim the coveted honour when the award is presented on October 26, following another remarkable campaign that has seen him guide Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup final.
The 39-year-old strengthened his credentials on Wednesday after inspiring Argentina’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the World Cup semi-final.

Although he did not score, Messi delivered two decisive assists as the reigning world champions overturned a one-goal deficit to book their place in Sunday’s final against Spain.
His influential display further enhanced his chances of securing what would be another historic Ballon d’Or triumph, adding to a career that has already redefined individual excellence in world football.
According to the latest projections by prediction platform Polymarket, Messi currently holds a 31.7 per cent probability of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Hot on his heels is Barcelona and Spain winger Lamine Yamal, who has been given a 30.9 per cent chance after an outstanding season for club and country.
Yamal has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, playing a pivotal role in Spain’s impressive run to the World Cup final while continuing to establish himself as one of the brightest young talents in global football.
England captain Harry Kane occupies third place in the projections with a 13.5 per cent probability despite his country’s semi-final exit. Kane has enjoyed another prolific season at club level and captained England to the last four of the World Cup.
France forward Ousmane Dembele is ranked fourth with a 3.1 per cent chance after helping Les Bleus reach the semi-finals before they were eliminated by Spain.
The Ballon d’Or race remains open, with the outcome of Sunday’s World Cup final expected to play a significant role in determining the eventual winner.
A victory for Argentina over Spain could further strengthen Messi’s claim to the award, particularly if the veteran playmaker delivers another decisive performance on football’s biggest stage.
Likewise, Spain’s emerging stars, led by Yamal, could significantly boost their own Ballon d’Or prospects should La Roja lift the World Cup trophy.
The Ballon d’Or, awarded annually to the world’s best-performing footballer, recognises outstanding performances at both club and international levels over the course of the season.
The winner of the 2026 edition will be announced during the Ballon d’Or gala scheduled for October 26, where football’s biggest stars will gather to celebrate the year’s finest individual performances.
