Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has strongly condemned the recent assault on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as an unfortunate escalation of what appears to be internal party conflict.

In a personal statement issued Tuesday evening, the governor expressed sympathy for the affected party members and warned against any attempt to destabilize the state under the guise of political activity.

“It is regrettable that certain individuals allegedly exploited Edo State’s peaceful environment to incite violence,” the statement read.

Okpebholo stressed that Edo would not tolerate the “importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state” for political purposes, insisting that the state must not be turned into a battleground for partisan rivalry.

“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” he declared.

As Chief Security Officer of the state, the governor affirmed his commitment to preventing any breakdown of law and order, noting that the precise motive behind the attack remains unclear.

“While the precise motive behind this attack remains unclear, I strongly believe its primary aim is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions,” he said.

The governor further maintained that no political blackmail would erode the support Edo residents have for his administration. He emphasized that politics should center on performance, public engagement and the continuous effort to earn the trust of the people.

“This is the foundation of our reputation, and we are committed to maintaining it,” Okpebholo stated.

He condemned the use of violence as a political tool, asserting that individuals who resort to such tactics in pursuit of electoral advantage demonstrate a lack of integrity and respect for voters.

According to him, his party welcomes constructive opposition and would not be intimidated by what he described as blackmail or self-inflicted attacks.

While sympathizing with ADC members, the governor advised the party to refrain from external accusations, suggesting that the conflict appeared rooted in internal disagreements.

He also called on Edo residents to remain calm and not allow the incident to tarnish the state’s image.

“Edo remains a peaceful state, and that legacy must be preserved,” he affirmed.

In a stern warning to opposition groups, Okpebholo urged all political parties to resolve internal disputes before organizing public gatherings.

“Any attempt to incite violence under the pretext of political activity would be firmly addressed,” he warned.

The governor further directed the police and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and monitor political events to prevent escalation, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
