Obi, Kwankwaso meeting in Kano sparks fresh 2027 alliance talks

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reignited political conversations following a Sallah visit to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Kano State—an engagement now widely interpreted as a potential step toward a broader opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Details of the meeting were disclosed by Yunusa Tanko, Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, who revealed via a post on X that discussions centered on “strategising for our collective interest to make Nigeria work again for all of us.”
The high-profile visit has fueled fresh speculation about a possible political realignment between the two leaders, whose separate presidential ambitions in 2023 many believe fragmented what could have been a formidable third-force coalition.
Echoes of a Missed Opportunity
Political observers say the Kano meeting revives memories of failed pre-election negotiations between Obi and Kwankwaso in the buildup to the 2023 presidential poll.
At the time, both men commanded significant grassroots momentum—Obi through the youth-driven Obidient Movement under the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso through the entrenched Kwankwasiyya structure under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), particularly in Northern Nigeria.
However, talks reportedly collapsed over disagreements on power-sharing arrangements, party hierarchy, and the question of who would emerge as the presidential flagbearer.

The breakdown ultimately led to parallel campaigns, splitting opposition votes in a closely contested election won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Since then, analysts have repeatedly argued that a united front could have significantly altered the electoral outcome.
Obasanjo’s Renewed Coalition Push
Fresh momentum behind a possible alliance is also being linked to efforts by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to rally opposition figures into a cohesive bloc ahead of 2027.
According to Sumner Sambo, Editor for Politics at Arise News, a committee established by Obasanjo in December has already initiated behind-the-scenes talks involving Obi and Kwankwaso.
Speaking on The Morning Show, Sambo disclosed that consultations are ongoing, with stakeholders working to build consensus among key political actors, including Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi.
He noted that pressure is mounting on Kwankwaso from political stakeholders in Kano to reconsider joining a broader coalition, adding that the success of such an alliance would depend largely on managing competing interests within the opposition.
Sambo described the move as part of Obasanjo’s broader effort to reshape Nigeria’s democratic landscape by fostering a new generation of leadership capable of mounting a credible challenge to the ruling party.
Growing Calls for Political Realignment
Also weighing in, NNPP’s National Legal Adviser, Magaji Mato, said public sentiment increasingly favours an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance, describing it as a long-anticipated political combination.

According to Mato, both leaders represent a generation of tested and trusted politicians seen by many Nigerians as capable of delivering change. He noted that reactions to Obi’s Kano visit have been “overwhelming,” reflecting strong grassroots support for a possible partnership.
Mato argued that if allowed to evolve organically, such an alliance could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.
Talks “Already Yielding Results”
Tanko further revealed that discussions between both camps date back to the aftermath of the 2023 elections, with the primary objective of building a broad-based coalition to “rescue Nigeria.”
He expressed optimism that collaboration between the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya base would strengthen opposition ranks and improve electoral prospects, especially amid growing dissatisfaction with the country’s current socio-economic conditions.
According to him, the proposed alliance could extend beyond the two leaders to include other stakeholders across the political spectrum, potentially forming a formidable bloc capable of challenging the ruling party.
Analysts See Turning Point for Opposition
For public affairs analyst Nduka Odo, the Kano meeting represents a critical turning point for opposition politics in Nigeria.
Odo described the engagement as “long overdue,” noting that such alignment should have been pursued ahead of the 2023 elections. He, however, characterized the recent development as a “shocker” that could redefine the dynamics of the 2027 race.
He warned that the growing dominance of the APC poses a threat to opposition viability, stressing that a strong and united opposition is essential for democratic balance.
While expressing skepticism about the readiness of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain competitive, Odo said the Obi–Kwankwaso engagement currently appears to be “the only light in the tunnel” for opposition forces.
He added that the success of any coalition would depend on the sincerity, commitment, and strategic coordination of its leaders, cautioning that symbolic meetings alone would not be sufficient to challenge an incumbent administration.
Road to 2027
As political alignments begin to take shape, observers say the coming months will be critical in determining whether the renewed engagement between Obi and Kwankwaso evolves into a concrete alliance or remains another missed opportunity.
With economic challenges, rising living costs, and security concerns dominating public discourse, analysts believe the conditions may be ripe for a united opposition front—provided key actors can overcome past differences and build a cohesive political platform.
