The Edo State Government has arrested six suspected scavengers over the alleged vandalism of public infrastructure and issued a 21-day eviction notice to scrap dealers operating illegally within parts of the state capital.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Eugene Okoloise, Chairman of the Edo State Public Property Protection Committee, during a press briefing in Benin City.

Okoloise said the suspects, popularly known as “iron-condemn” dealers, were apprehended following reports of coordinated looting of government-owned facilities. He disclosed that the individuals allegedly vandalised public schools, including Fabiyi Akpata Primary School, where roofing sheets were removed and classroom furniture taken for resale as scrap.

He added that the suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court next week.

The government also issued a 21-day quit notice to scavengers occupying unauthorised locations, particularly along the Lagos Street moat and surrounding areas. Authorities described the moats as protected heritage sites, stressing that continued occupation and commercial activity there is illegal.

According to the committee, affected individuals are required to vacate the areas within the stipulated period and relocate to approved locations. The government further warned that scrap dealers may be required to contribute to the rehabilitation of vandalised public facilities or risk a complete ban on scavenging activities across the state.

Speaking at the briefing, Abbas Garuba, Chairman of the Scrap Dealers Association in Edo State, acknowledged the concerns raised by the government. He said the association is taking steps to regulate its members and identify those involved in illegal activities.

The Edo State Government reiterated its support for legitimate recycling businesses but maintained a zero-tolerance stance on vandalism and any actions that threaten public infrastructure.
