Ronaldo ranks self alongside Messi, Pelé, Maradona, declares status
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has boldly declared himself the most complete player in the history of football, placing his achievements and abilities at the centre of the long-running debate over the greatest footballer of all time.
The 41-year-old made the declaration during an interview with CNN Portugal, where he addressed comparisons with some of the most celebrated figures in the sport, including Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, Brazilian legends Pelé and Diego Maradona.
Ronaldo acknowledged that football fans have different preferences when choosing their greatest player but maintained that his own assessment of his abilities sets him apart.
“If someone prefers Messi, Pelé or Maradona, that’s a matter of personal taste. I respect that,” the Portugal international said.
“I am the most complete player.”
The statement adds another chapter to the enduring debate surrounding Ronaldo and Messi, whose careers have defined an era of football and generated years of discussion over individual excellence, consistency, trophies and goal-scoring records.
Ronaldo, who has enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades, has established himself as one of football’s most prolific forwards. His achievements across club and international football have helped sustain his reputation as one of the most influential players of his generation.
His career has featured spells at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, before his move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

During his time at Real Madrid, Ronaldo became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, recording an extraordinary scoring run that contributed to multiple major honours, including UEFA Champions League titles. He also won domestic league championships in England, Spain and Italy.
At international level, Ronaldo has been Portugal’s central figure for years, leading the national team to victory at the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League. His longevity has also enabled him to maintain a prominent role in international football well into his forties.
Meanwhile, his comparison with Messi remains one of the most discussed rivalries in the sport. Messi, a World Cup winner with Argentina, has built an equally remarkable record, including multiple Ballon d’Or awards and major club and international honours.
Pelé, widely regarded as one of Brazil’s greatest football icons, won three FIFA World Cups, while Maradona led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title and remains one of the most influential players in football history.
Although opinions about the greatest player differ depending on the criteria used, Ronaldo’s latest comments suggest that he believes his combination of goal-scoring, physical attributes, technical ability, versatility and longevity makes him stand out.
Beyond the debate over individual greatness, Ronaldo is also approaching another significant milestone in his career.
The forward is reportedly 20 goals away from reaching 1,000 career goals, a landmark that would further strengthen his place in football’s statistical history if achieved.
Reaching the target would represent another remarkable achievement for a player who has continued to pursue records and maintain his scoring ambitions despite his age.
However, the question of who deserves the title of football’s greatest player remains subjective, with supporters weighing different factors, including trophies, individual awards, technical brilliance, influence on the game and longevity.
For Ronaldo, however, there appears to be little uncertainty about where he stands in that conversation: he considers himself the most complete footballer the sport has ever produced.
