Gombe Commissioner for Information Umar Suleiman has said a group within the Peoples Democratic Party is pushing Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo to contest as the party’s presidential candidate.
The reason, he said, is that the governor has vast experience in financial management.
In a statement on Saturday, the commissioner said Nigeria needs, at the moment, a financial expert who could turn around the nation’s fortunes by deploying sound skills to manage men and resources.
“If we decide to elect someone without a solid financial background, it will be very difficult for the person to turn around the economy of this nation,” he said.
“Many things are needed to ensure that the economy is revived. Unfortunately, the present government is saying that we are out of recession but a lot of people are still suffering.
“Something drastic needs to be done in the area of economic revival of this country. There should be fresh composition of the economic team because the economy is still sick.”
Apart from this group, other Nigerians have been suggesting the PDP consider Daekwambo as President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2019.
Catholic Father Ejike Mbaka recently mooted the idea of fielding the governor as the PDP flag bearer in the 2019 presidential election.
That, however, will go against speculations that former VP Abubakar Atiku has the strongest odds in his favour in the race to pick up the party’s flag for the presidential poll.
Former Jigawa Gov. Sule Lamido is also going to give the party primary a shot.
