Militia takes on herdsmen in bloody reprisal

No fewer than two males and two females have been killed as reprisals between Fulani and Bachama communities in Adamawa escalated on Sunday.

Several properties were also destroyed in the violence in Numan Local Government Area.

Suspected Fulani herdsmen were said to have invaded the village (Kikon) in the early hours of Sunday, on motorcycles, throwing the sleeping villagers into a panic.

The Bachama militia would later launch their own attack later in the day, on Dowayan-waja and Lure villages occupied by the Fulani.

Chairman of Numan Local Government, Arnold Jibila, said the number of deaths could not be ascertained yet.

Those wounded have been evacuated to the Numan General Hospital.

An earlier attack by Bachama people sacking eight villages, and killing scores of people provoked the pre-dawn attack, according to reports.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Othman Abubakar, said the police area commander has confirmed that two males and two females were killed.

According to Abubakar, villagers injured in the attacks were taken to Numan General Hospital for treatment. He said many houses and property were destroyed in Kikon and Dowaya -waja villages.

He said two units of anti-riot mobile police officers have since been redeployed to ensure

normalcy in the area. He pledged that the assailants would be apprehended.

The weekend has witnessed rising spates of attacks between herdsmen and their host ot neighbouring communities across the nation.
