Stakeholders lament health hazards of oil pollution

Stakeholders have lamented the health hazards of oil pollution in host
communities and the environs. Thus, medical experts at a public
lecture in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State, advocated global best practices in
the oil and gas industry as well as stricter regulations by the
Federal Government of Nigeria to enforce compliance by the
International Oil Companies.
The medical experts and other stakeholders at the Public lecture in
Yenagoa, raised issues relating to the health implications of Oil
Exploration and Gas Flaring.
A 2018 report by the Department of Petroleum Resources indicated that
despite 70 per cent reduction in gas flaring, Nigeria ranks 7th among
countries still flaring gas in the world.
This record was a great concern to members of the Association of
General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria when they met in
Yenagoa.
The health implication may be grave, but guest speakers at the lecture
believed solutions are still within touching distance.
The association wrapped up its annual general meeting with a free
medical outreach.
