ADC dissolves Kano exco, appoints caretaker committee after court ruling

The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dissolved the party’s Kano State Executive Committee and inaugurated a caretaker committee to oversee its affairs following a leadership crisis and a recent Federal High Court ruling.

The development was announced on Monday by the ADC Deputy National Chairman (North-West), Hajiya Najaatu Mohammed, during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Kano.

Mohammed said the decision was taken in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act, following the court judgment, which affected the legitimacy of the previous state executive.

According to her, the dissolution was necessary to restore stability and ensure the smooth administration of the party in Kano State.

“This important action is not out of preference, but out of constitutional duty,” she said. “Every action taken has been guided by the Constitution of our party, the Electoral Act, and our collective responsibility to protect the future of the ADC in Kano State.”

She added that maintaining order within the party was essential, warning that leadership uncertainty could undermine members’ confidence and weaken the party’s structure ahead of future elections.

The party announced Alhaji Umar Bala as chairman of the caretaker committee, while Isma’il Musa will serve as secretary. The committee is expected to oversee the day-to-day administration of the party and supervise the process leading to the election of a new substantive executive.

Although party leaders described the move as a constitutional and administrative necessity, it comes amid growing political tension within the Kano chapter ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say the party has recently witnessed increasing competition among aspirants interested in securing the ADC governorship ticket in the state, a development believed to have contributed to internal disagreements.

Mohammed, however, urged members not to interpret the dissolution as a reflection on the commitment or loyalty of party faithful in Kano.

“The constitution of a caretaker committee should never be seen as a judgment on the dedication and contributions of our members across Kano State,” she said, calling on all stakeholders to support the transitional arrangement in the interest of party unity.

She expressed confidence that the caretaker committee would strengthen the party’s structure, reconcile aggrieved members, and prepare the ground for a credible congress to elect a new state executive.
