Benue community in fear as suspected herdsmen kill, behead resident in Apa LGA

Residents of a community in Benue State are living in fear following the killing and reported beheading of a patent medicine seller by suspected armed herders in Apa Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred in the rural community, has heightened tensions in an area that has witnessed repeated episodes of violence linked to herder–farmer conflicts and armed attacks in recent years.

Local sources said the victim, a trader in pharmaceutical and health supplies commonly referred to as a patent medicine seller, was attacked under circumstances that remain unclear. The assailants were said to have fled the scene before help could arrive.

The latest killing has intensified anxiety among residents, many of whom say they are increasingly afraid to travel or carry out normal economic activities, particularly in remote farming settlements.

Community members are calling for increased security presence, urging authorities to step up patrols and intelligence operations to prevent further attacks.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, such attacks in Benue State have in the past prompted police deployments and joint security operations involving other agencies.

Benue State has long been affected by recurring clashes and violent attacks attributed to armed herders and other criminal groups operating in rural corridors. The situation has led to repeated calls from residents and civil society groups for stronger protection of farming communities.

Authorities are expected to investigate the latest incident and provide updates as security assessments continue in the affected area.
