Edo rebuts APC’s criticism on teacher recruitment, defends commitment to quality education
The Edo State government has responded strongly to recent comments by Prince Kassim Afegbua of the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing his remarks as both uninformed and disruptive to the recruitment of quality teachers essential to the state’s educational reform initiative, the EdoBEST programme.
Government representatives have underscored that the recruitment of skilled educators is fundamental to EdoBEST’s mission of transforming educational standards and empowering Edo’s youth through quality instruction.
Afegbua’s statements, which question the legitimacy of recent teacher appointments, reveal a misunderstanding of both the legal and administrative processes guiding these decisions, officials stated.
They clarified that under the Nigerian Constitution, executive power in Edo State resides solely with the sitting governor until the end of his term on November 12. This renders the APC’s efforts to interfere in educational policy both premature and without legal basis.

“The qualified teachers recently employed underwent a rigorous application process that began well before the elections, showing the administration’s genuine commitment to strengthening the state’s educational sector,” says Chris Osa Nehikhare, head, Communication&Orientation and member of the Transition Committee.
“This process reflects the state’s dedication to securing knowledgeable and qualified individuals who can support the educational advancement of Edo’s children, aligning with the goals of EdoBEST to build a sustainable and equitable learning environment.
Educational policy experts have also weighed in, emphasizing that the APC’s criticism appears to lack constructive substance and instead reflects an apparent reluctance to engage with the real challenges of governance.
“The constant undermining of such initiatives does not serve the interests of our children or our communities,” said Dr. Nkechi Omoruyi, an educational policy analyst.

“Recruiting competent educators is a fundamental step toward improving educational outcomes, and any efforts to disrupt this process would be counterproductive.”
Nehikhare urged the public, especially teachers, parents, and students, to remain focused on the progress being made in the state’s education system.
By engaging committed and qualified educators, the administration aims to create a solid foundation for the future of Edo’s youth, regardless of the political rhetoric aimed at discrediting these achievements.
The government reassured Edo residents of its unwavering commitment to prioritizing quality education, calling for unity and support for the teachers who are dedicated to shaping the state’s future.
“Our focus remains on building an educational framework that serves our children, beyond the distractions of unfounded criticisms,” he concluded.
