Edo schools on alert as DSS uncovers alleged kidnap plot
The Department of State Services (DSS) in Edo State has raised a security alert over an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct school children across parts of the state, particularly in the Edo North Senatorial District.
The warning was contained in an intelligence memorandum issued by the Edo State Command of the DSS and addressed to the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), urging immediate preventive measures to forestall any attack on schools and educational institutions.
The memo, referenced S.66/A/3972 and dated June 5, 2026, was signed by B. Agada on behalf of the Director of Security.
According to the document, the intelligence was obtained from an intercepted telephone conversation between two suspected bandits identified as Bawa and Nuhu, both listed without surnames.
The DSS disclosed that the suspects allegedly discussed plans to shift their focus from wealthy individuals to school children after previous kidnapping operations failed to generate the expected financial returns.
The intelligence report stated that the suspects believed the abduction of school children would attract greater attention from government authorities and increase the chances of securing substantial ransom payments and concessions.
“Intelligence at the disposal of the Command indicated plans by suspected bandits to kidnap school children in the State, particularly in Edo North Senatorial District,” the memo stated.
According to the DSS, one of the suspects, identified as Bawa, is believed to be of Fulani extraction and originates from Zamfara State.

The report further noted that during the intercepted conversation, both suspects openly discussed their intention to target school children as a more lucrative kidnapping option.
Security concerns were heightened by the arrest of a suspected scout allegedly linked to the planned operation.
The DSS disclosed that on June 4, 2026, a 25-year-old suspect identified as Emmanuel Momidu was apprehended while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.
Authorities believe the suspect may have been gathering information on the school environment as part of preparations for a possible abduction attempt.
Following the intelligence report, the DSS called on security agencies to immediately strengthen protective measures around schools, particularly those considered vulnerable in Edo North.
The agency recommended increased deployment of security personnel to schools and surrounding communities, enhanced surveillance operations, and closer collaboration among security agencies, local vigilante groups, hunters, and the Edo State Security Corps.
“In view, it is advised that countermeasures be placed around schools in the State with focus on Edo North Senatorial District, to strengthen security around schools and other educational institutions,” the memo stated.
The alert comes amid persistent concerns over school-related kidnappings in parts of Nigeria, where criminal groups have increasingly targeted educational institutions for ransom, leading to heightened fears among parents, students and school administrators.
