FBI places England vs Argentina semi-final on highest security alert
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has designated Wednesday’s FIFA World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina as the tournament’s highest-risk fixture, prompting heightened security measures ahead of the highly anticipated clash.
According to a report by the Daily Mirror, the security assessment followed a high-level meeting involving the FBI, FIFA officials and local law enforcement agencies, with authorities citing the long-standing rivalry between the two football nations as a key factor behind the decision.
Officials are particularly concerned about the possibility of clashes between supporters, given the historic tensions that have defined previous encounters between England and Argentina both on and off the football pitch.
As part of the security arrangements, fans of both teams will enter the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta through separate gates to minimise the risk of confrontations before kickoff.

However, authorities acknowledged that supporters will not be separated inside the stadium, largely because ticket resales have made it difficult to guarantee complete segregation once spectators are inside the venue.
The rivalry between England and Argentina extends beyond football, having been shaped by controversial matches over the years as well as the 1982 Falklands War.
Political sensitivities resurfaced this week after Argentina’s foreign minister renewed the country’s claim over the Falkland Islands, a position swiftly rejected by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Despite the renewed political rhetoric, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni appealed for calm, urging supporters to treat the occasion strictly as a sporting contest.
“The message to the Argentine people is that this is a soccer match,” Scaloni said. “We’re going to face a great team with a great coach, but it is just a soccer match, nothing more than that.”
The Atlanta Police Department also confirmed that additional officers and security personnel have been deployed across the city ahead of the semi-final. The increased security presence will cover the stadium, entertainment districts and other high-traffic areas expected to attract large numbers of fans.
In a statement, the department said the enhanced measures were intended to safeguard residents and visitors, deter criminal activity and ensure the event proceeds without incident.
The winner of Wednesday’s semi-final will advance to Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Spain and France.
