Four dead, 24 injured as Warri–Itakpe train derails in Delta
At least four people, including an infant, have been confirmed dead and 24 others seriously injured after a passenger train derailed along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor near Agbor in Delta State.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, June 8, 2026, and involved the Warri–Itakpe Railway, one of the country’s major standard-gauge rail services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The Federal Government confirmed the fatalities in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi.
According to the statement, the deceased include two adult females, one adult male, and one infant. It added that 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered minor injuries.
One staff member of the Nigerian Railway Corporation was also injured and is receiving treatment in stable condition.
Officials said the train was carrying 482 people at the time of the accident, including 442 passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel, and service staff.
Among those onboard were public figures, including Senator Ede Dafinone and former Delta State Government Secretary, Patrick Ukah.
Authorities confirmed that four coaches overturned while a fifth derailed completely from the tracks.
A coordinated emergency response was launched immediately after the derailment, involving the Delta State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Rescue operations were concluded later on Monday evening, with all injured passengers evacuated to hospitals in Agbor and surrounding communities for treatment.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said a full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the derailment.
The Warri–Itakpe corridor has experienced operational disruptions in recent years, including previous safety concerns and suspected cases of track vandalism, prompting periodic service suspensions and safety reviews.
The Ministry of Transportation expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said it is closely monitoring the condition of injured passengers.
Authorities have urged the public to rely only on verified updates as investigations continue into the cause of the accident.
