FUTA postpones resumption, cancels registration due to student Protests
Following student protests over increased tuition fees and charges, the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has announced the indefinite postponement of student resumption for the 2023/2024 academic session.
Additionally, all students currently residing on campus must vacate their hostels within 24 hours.
The university attributed the postponement to ongoing discussions regarding the adjusted fees.
They clarified that registration for returning students and fee payments, initially scheduled for January 15th, are temporarily suspended.
FUTA emphasized that tuition remains free, and the revised charges primarily concern student-related services impacted by rising costs in the broader economy.
These include items like electricity, water, hostel maintenance, and even medical examinations for new students.

However, students are not satisfied with the explanation concluded by FUTA authorities.
They argue that the increased charges place a significant financial burden on them and their families, especially in the current economic climate.
The postponement provides space for negotiations and possible concessions as the university maintains its “built-in mechanism” for reaching consensus with students on such matters.
The outcome of these discussions will determine the revised start date and fee structure for the upcoming academic session.
