Ghana scraps COVID restrictions, mandatory mask-wearing
The Ghanaian government has scrapped COVID-19 restrictions in the country, reversed mandatory mask-wearing and reopened its land and sea borders on Monday.
President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana in a broadcast on Sunday night directed that the wearing of masks in the country is no longer mandatory, noting that active Covid-19 cases have dropped below 100.
President Afuko-Addo also ordered the resumption of outdoor activities in full capacity as long as all persons are fully vaccinated.
The Ghanaian President had stated: “It has been a difficult two years for all of us, and we are seeing light at the end of a very long tunnel.
“I appeal to all of us to live responsibly, protect ourselves at all times.”
The economy of Ghana has been struggling for rebound since the unnecessary lockdown for perceived coronavirus pandemic. The economy is also carrying a heavy public debt burden.
The Bank of Ghana in a recent report revealed that the debt ratio to GDP was 80.1 percent at the end of December 2021.
