“Happy birthday to my son” check out why this post caused a stir on Twitter
Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. is an American former professional basketball player and former president of basketball operations for the National Basketball Association’s Los Angeles Lakers. Earvin has a gay son named EJ.
It was the year 2010, and scarves were all the rage. “Very European,” EJ Johnson, Magic Johnson’s son, remembers telling his father when he came out as gay. “You wore your linen scarves even in the summer.” That was the expression. And, of course, because it was hot, I was wearing scarves. And he couldn’t take it anymore.”
Johnson confessed that he first struggled to come to terms with his son’s sexual orientation in a new interview with Variety ahead of the April 22 premiere of “They Call Me Magic,” an Apple TV Plus docuseries that explores his life and career.
“When you’re a kid who grew up playing team sports, you’re always wondering, ‘Is he going to play sports?'” According to Johnson. “And then I noticed he liked dolls and playing dress-up… ‘What exactly are you doing?’…
“I was out to all my pals,” EJ, now 29, recalls. “The last people I needed to talk to about it were [my parents].” Even though it wasn’t new to me, they had to take it all in and digest it. My father in particular, because he was the last person I spoke to. In the conversation, I believe it was simply too much for him to take in. There was a lot of back and forth. And all he was doing was ranting about things that weren’t especially pleasant. But he’s not the type to operate well when cornered or surprised.
He recently shared a photo of himself and his son wishing his him a happy birthday, which sparked outrage on social media. We say more blessing to EJ.
