Health awareness post raises concerns over food label literacy, processed snacks
A growing conversation around food safety and consumer awareness has resurfaced online after a social media post with the name Beyond the Facts, urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to ingredient labels on snacks and processed food products.
The post, themed “Label Literacy: What They Sell vs What You Buy”, warned consumers to carefully examine the ingredients listed on packaged foods before purchasing them. It claimed that some additives and ingredients commonly found in processed snacks could be harmful to health if consumed regularly.

According to the message, shoppers should develop the habit of reading product labels and avoid items containing ingredients they do not understand or consider unsafe. The writer strongly advised consumers to “drop” any product that contains questionable ingredients, describing such items as unfit for consumption.
The post further encouraged the public to become more informed about food composition and nutrition, arguing that many people buy snacks and processed foods without knowing exactly what they contain.
Consumer advocates say the broader message about label literacy is important, especially as processed foods become more common in Nigerian households.
Understanding ingredients, expiration dates, nutritional values, and regulatory approvals can help consumers make healthier choices and avoid products that may not align with their dietary needs.
