As Edo State gears up for its governorship election on Saturday, September 21, analysts predict a highly competitive race.

The election will determine the state’s 11th governor, with 18 political parties participating. Key candidates include Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

Experts stress the significance of voter turnout, with 2,249,780 voters (85.57% of those registered) having collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Political analyst Dr. Usman Musa notes, “With a high PVC collection rate, this election is shaping up to be one of the most participatory in Edo’s history. The large turnout could tilt the balance in what is expected to be a close contest.”

However, concerns about violence loom over the election. Security specialists have flagged eight Local Government Areas (LGAs) as potential hotspots for violence, including Ikpoba/Okha, Oredo, and Etsako West.

Dr. Funmi Adebayo, a political risk expert, warns, “The history of violence in these areas could undermine the electoral process, and adequate security measures will be crucial to ensuring a fair vote.”

Despite the challenges, the election’s outcome will have significant implications for Edo’s political future, as well as for the broader national landscape.
