Japan knocks Nigeria’s falconets out of FIFA U20 women’s world cup
Japan, the reigning vice champions, narrowly defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia on Friday morning, ending the Falconets’ promising run in the tournament.
The match, held at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, saw Japan take the lead with a goal in each half. Miyu Matsunaga opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, heading in a cross from Rihona Ujihara.
Despite Nigeria’s best efforts, including a near-equalizer when Rofiat Imuran’s cross rattled Japan’s goalkeeper Akana Okuma, the East Asians maintained their advantage.

In the 66th minute, Maya Hijikata doubled Japan’s lead with a well-placed shot after receiving a cross from Chinari Sasai.
Nigeria continued to battle, and in the final moments of the match, Olushola Shobowale scored for the Falconets, converting a cross from substitute Goodness Osigwe. However, the late goal was not enough to turn the tide.
Japan’s speed and precision were countered by Nigeria’s resilience and tactical play, but ultimately, the Falconets were unable to overcome their opponents.
The result sends Japan into the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in a rematch of the previous tournament’s final.
