Just in: Reps proposes creation of 31 news states across Nigeria
The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 new states in Nigeria as part of ongoing efforts to restructure the nation’s political landscape.
The proposal was announced during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The recommendation for the creation of additional states was contained in a letter read by Kalu, who also chairs the Constitution Review Committee.
According to the proposal, the distribution of the new states is as follows: North Central: Six new states; North East: Four new states; North West: Five new states; South East: Five new states; South-South: Four new states and South West: Seven new states.

The move is expected to spark widespread debate across political and regional lines, with some stakeholders advocating for increased representation and equitable resource distribution, while others caution against the financial and administrative burden of expanding the state structure.
Further details on the specific names and boundaries of the proposed states are expected to be released in subsequent deliberations as lawmakers continue reviewing the constitutional amendment process.
