Two ranking Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senators, Matthew Urhoghide (Edo South) and Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central), have resigned from their party barely 11 days to the expiration of the 10th Senate.

They announced their resignation during plenary, on Wednesday.

During the announcement, the senators however, did not announce the party they will defect to.

The Senators’ notices of resignation were contained in separate letters read by Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, who presided over the plenary.

While Urhoghide said his resignation took immediate effect, Akinyelure said his resignation will take effect from June 11, 2023 after expiration of his third term in the Senate.

Urhoghide, who is the Chairman of Senate Committee on Public Accounts said he is resigning from the PDP because of the division among leaders of the party.

He claimed that the differences would not allow him to grow politically if he continued to stay as a member of the party.

Urhoghide’s letter reads in part: “I write to formally inform you and the entire people of Nigeria that I am resigning my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately.

“It will be difficult for someone like me to grow and function as a leader. I am grateful to the party for giving me the platform.”

In his letter, Akinyelure, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions noted that he wished leaders of the PDP best of luck in their future endeavours.
