A jarring incident unfolded in Kogi State this week, as a Senator of the National Assembly was harassed and physically attacked by thugs within the Government House itself.

Senator Isah Echocho, representing Kogi East, faced the assault shortly after a meeting with Governor Yahaya Bello on Tuesday.

The shocking episode began with a seemingly cordial visit by Kogi State legislators in the Senate and House of Representatives.

They came to offer congratulations on the recent governorship election and pledge loyalty to the incoming administration.

However, the joy of this courtesy call was shattered when Echocho found himself targeted by an unidentified group of thugs.

According to Echocho’s account, the attackers singled him out and accused him of playing a role in the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) performance in the Kogi East senatorial district during the governorship election.

While APC candidate Usman Ododo secured the overall victory, Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) garnered significant support, primarily in Echocho’s district.

The senator maintained that despite his campaigning efforts, the electorate had made their choice.

Yet, the thugs held him accountable for the disappointing outcome in his region.

The situation escalated to the point where they brandished weapons and physically threatened him before police officers intervened and provided him with safety.

Governor Bello reacted swiftly to the incident, condemning the act of violence and ordering the immediate arrest of the culprits.

His Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Mohammed, issued a statement emphasizing the governor’s zero tolerance for hooliganism and indiscipline within the Government House premises.

Additionally, Bello has banned unauthorized persons from accessing the Government House, aiming to enhance security and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Kogi state incident raises serious concerns about political violence and the safety of representatives within government buildings.

The swift action taken by Governor Bello demonstrates a commitment to upholding law and order, but the underlying tensions surrounding the election results remain unresolved.

As investigations into the attack continue, it will be crucial to ensure justice for Echocho and address the factors that led to this unacceptable act of political aggression.
