The Lagos State Government has released a detailed traffic diversion plan ahead of scheduled maintenance works on the Marine Bridge, which will run in two phases from Sunday, May 18 to Sunday, June 8, 2025.

The maintenance project, which is being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works, is aimed at addressing structural issues and ensuring safer road usage.

The announcement was made via the Lagos State Government’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, with authorities stressing the importance of minimizing disruptions and ensuring smooth traffic flow throughout the repair period.

According to the statement, the maintenance will be carried out in two phases to manage vehicular movement and reduce congestion:

Phase 1: Sunday, May 18 – Saturday, June 1, 2025

Affected Route: From the foot of Marine Bridge (Lawani Oguntayo Road, inbound Apapa/Costain)

Traffic Diversion:

Motorists approaching Apapa from Ijora Olopa will be diverted via the Ijora Causeway access ramp located beside Omni Retail Company to continue their journey.

Phase 2: Sunday, June 2 – Sunday, June 8, 2025

Affected Route: Ijora Badia and Lilypond Access Ramp inbound Apapa

Vehicles from Costain to Apapa will operate under a contraflow arrangement, using the lane normally designated for Costain-bound traffic.

Vehicles coming from Ijora Olopa to Apapa will be diverted through the Ijora Causeway access ramp, also beside Omni Retail, and proceed via the Lilypond Access Road.

The bridge is expected to fully reopen on Monday, June 9, 2025, following the completion of all maintenance works.

Speaking on the development, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured residents that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to key points to manage traffic flow and assist motorists.

“LASTMA personnel will be strategically positioned to ensure smooth traffic operations and reduce delays during this critical maintenance period,” he said. “We appeal to Lagosians to be patient, cooperate with traffic officers, and strictly follow the provided diversion routes.”

Mr. Osiyemi further emphasized the importance of the repair work, explaining that the partial closure of the bridge is necessary to repair damaged portions underneath, ensuring safety for all road users.

The Lagos State Government also encouraged commuters to plan their journeys in advance, explore alternative routes, and make use of public transportation to help reduce the volume of private vehicles on the roads during the maintenance period.

This maintenance effort is part of ongoing initiatives to enhance the integrity of critical infrastructure across the state and minimize the risk of structural failure due to prolonged wear and tear.
