MONARCHY: Murder, arson, chaos in Ogun over succession
The competition to ascend the royal stool of Agosasa, Ipokia,, Ogun has turned to battle royale.
At least three people have been killed, and properties, including cars and houses torched, beside the wounded now in hospitals.
The tension began on the weekend, escalated on Monday, but the friction dates back to the death of the former Oja of Agosasa, James Elegbede in February.
The fight has been between self-appointed kingmakers—an APC stalwart Akeem Adigun and the youth of the community.
Nafiu Amosun, a candidate the youth are pushing was shot dead Sunday evening. That triggered the melee.
The only suspect the youth could come up with was Adigun sponsoring the rival
Houses and vehicles belonging to Adigun and others, including a government appointee Isiala Aderohunmu were destroyed following the murder.
Many have fled the town.
The National Daily learnt security agents, including soldiers, have occupied the town, making everybody keep indoors, or take to their heels.
But the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he had information about only one dead victim, and the police have arrested suspects.
He confirmed in reports the incident is an Obaship tussle, and one person was shot, and that some houses and vehicles were razed.
He however added that a police intervention is being led by the deputy commissioner of police, with men on the ground to deescalate the violence.
