Morocco cruise past Canada 3-0 to book World Cup quarter-final spot
Morocco national football team advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada men’s national soccer team 3-0 in their Round of 16 clash in Houston on Saturday, ending Canada’s historic tournament run.
Despite a bright start by Canada, Morocco weathered the early pressure before taking control in the second half. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart, finishing a well-worked free-kick routine orchestrated by captain Achraf Hakimi. Ounahi doubled Morocco’s advantage in the 82nd minute with a curling strike following a swift counterattack, while substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed the victory deep into stoppage time.
Canada, playing in front of a passionate crowd, created several early opportunities through Tani Oluwaseyi and Jonathan David, but Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced key saves to keep the match scoreless before the Atlas Lions struck after halftime.
The victory marks Morocco’s second consecutive appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals, making the Atlas Lions the first African nation to reach the last eight in back-to-back tournaments. They will next face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between France national football team and Paraguay national football team.
For Canada, the defeat brings an end to a memorable campaign that saw the tournament co-hosts progress beyond the group stage and secure their first knockout appearance at a FIFA World Cup. However, the North Americans were unable to find a way past Morocco’s disciplined defence and clinical finishing when it mattered most.
